Jesse P. Hanna and his sons, David, John, James, and R. M. settled in 1856 in Brown County, near the Colorado River, about ten miles below the place where the Frisco railroad crosses it now, in a valley that now bears their name. In November 1835, Texas lawmakers created a corps of Texas Rangers to guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers.
